Court Statistics Reveal Rising Bankruptcy Cases, Shifting Workload – Budapest Business Journal

The Budapest Court of Appeals reports that the end of COVID‑era payment moratoriums led to a rise in bankruptcy cases, which first surged at the trial‑court level and later appeared in second‑instance proceedings.

Civil case filings also increased during the period of economic uncertainty, while administrative cases grew unevenly due to ongoing structural changes.

In labor disputes, 2025 saw 88 appeals related to dismissals, 34 cases involving injury‑related compensation and 23 wage‑related claims, with only four non‑compete disputes and two cases involving senior executives.

Case‑processing times remained strong.

In 2025, 299 of 303 economic cases, amounting to 98.7%, were completed within one year, and more than 96% of non‑litigation labor cases closed within three months.

Criminal filings included 30 budget‑fraud cases in 2024 and 32 in 2025, a roughly 10% increase, though still modest compared with the court’s annual caseload of about 400 criminal matters.
